The Century's Top 2500 Songs

The American Music Scene carefully compiled the list way back starting in March 1997 and it took a grueling 32 months to calculate the detailed point system. We would like to congratulate Elvis Presley who ended up ARTIST OF THE CENTURY  and the Beatles for GROUP OF THE CENTURY.   Let’s take a look how the point system works.

Categories

The weighted points for each song included a review and summation from the following (4) categories:

bullet

Peak Billboard Magazine Chart Positions

bullet

General Recurrent Plays At Radio Stations in The U.S. Major Markets

bullet

Request Levels From Store Record Outlets and Independent Field Disc Jockey Services and Companies

What is a Rating?

Ratings are determined by strengths within a certain category which are described as  EXCELLENT, VERY GOOD,  AVERAGE,  FAIR, POOR (OR HAVING NO IMPACT).

To spread points out more effectively, AN EXCELLENT RATING CAN either be a  9 or 10,  A VERY GOOD can be  7 or 8,  AN AVERAGE  can have a wider  4, 5 or 6,  FAIR can be 2 or  3, and POOR (OR HAVING NO IMPACT) is usually a 0.

The Point System (Rating Weight)

Each song is reviewed by 4 basic categories as specified above.  For each given category, a rating is given for its strength from Excellent (9 or 10 rating) down to Poor (Or Having No Impact), a  0 or 1 rating.

EXCELLENT (9 or 10 Rating)   100 points
VERY GOOD (7 or   8 Rating)   80 points
AVERAGE (4,5 or 6 Rating) 60 points
FAIR  (3 or 2 Rating) 40 points
POOR (OR HAVING NO IMPACT) ( 0  or 1  Rating)   20 points

Example:  Hypothetically, if SONG “A” would get a total of 1,600 out of a possible 4,000 if it was rated as follows:

EXCELLENT (9 Rating) in Billboard Charts 900 points
VERY GOOD (7 Rating) in Recurrent Plays at Radio Stations 560 points
FAIR  (3 Rating) in Request Levels at Outlet & DJ Services 120 points
POOR (1 Rating) Radio Stations Top Lists 20 points
Total Score 1,600 points

Each song received a weighted score with a possible range (from possible lowest) 0 PTS to maximum of 4,000 PTS.

If two songs would tie for exactly for Combined Final Score, then the first tiebreaker would be Total Weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.  Second tiebreakers are the amount of hits the artist had on the Billboard’s Hot 100.  It only happened three times. Again, we hope you will enjoy the CENTURY’S TOP 2500 SONGS and we’re sure you will be keep it as a memorabilia of where you were, who you were with and so on to reminisce, for only a song can help you remember when.
