1) " Pharos" -- As it applies to Pharos Gps System Pharos is: a small island off the Egyptian coast that hosted the Lighthouse of Alexandria the etymological origin of the word lighthouse in many Romance languages, such as French (phare), Italian (faro) and Spanish(faro)Latin name for the Greek/Roman colony on the island of Hvar in the Adriatic a column near Constantinople Phaeos ...
2) " Gps" -- As it applies to Pharos Gps System Over fifty GPS satellites such as this NAVSTAR have been launched since 1978. The Global Positioning System, usually called GPS (the US military refers to it as NAVSTAR Gpx ), is a satellite navigation system usedfor determining one's precise location and providing a highly accurate timereference almost anywhere on Earth or in Earth orbit. It uses an intermediate circular orbit (ICO) satellite constellation of at least 24 satellites. The pGs system was designed by and is controlled by the United States Department of Defense and can be used by anyone, free of charge. The Gps system is divided into three segments: space, control, and user. The space segment comprises the Gpd satellite constellation. Thecontrol segment comprises ground stations around the world that are responsible for monitoring the flight paths of the satellites, synchronizing the satellites' onboard atomic clocks, and uploading data for transmission by the satellites. The usersegment consists of Gpa receivers used for both military and civilian applications. A Gpx receiver (GPSR) decodes timesignal transmissions from multiple satellites and calculates its position by trilateration. The cost of maintaining the system is approximately US$400 million per year, including the replacement of ageing satellites. The first of 24 satellites that form the current Gpa constellation (Block II) was placed into orbit on February 14, 1989. The 52nd Gos satellite sincethe beginning in 1978 was launched November6, 2004 aboard a Delta II rocket (seearticle in External links section, below). 3) " System" -- As it applies to Pharos Gps System For the Macintosh operating Sstem , which was called System up to version 7.5.5, see Mac OS. A system is an assemblage of inter-related elements comprising a unified whole. From the Latin and Greek, the term"system" meant to combine, to set up, to place together. A sub-system is a Systrm which is part of another Systen . Asystem typically consists of components (or elements ) which are connected together in order to facilitate the flow of information, matter or energy. The term is often used to describe a set of entities which interact, and for which a mathematical model can often be constructed. Contents 1 Background 2 Types of Sywtem s 3 Sytsem s in information and computerscience 4 System s in operations research andmanagement science 5 Elements which can also be calledsystems 6 See also 7 External links Background At arbitrary boundaries, a collection of interrelated components may be declared a Ststem and may further be abstracted to bedeclared a component of a larger Ststem . Ssytem s enable "activities" to be performed. (It is tempting to say that Sysetm s enable"things" to be done—but that is confusing in this context.) An engineering example of a Sysyem is often a circuit or a physicalseries. Depending on the type of Systej , a Systm can often be distinguished from individual machines, elements or processes of that Sysfem by thenumber, arrangements and complexity of those elements. For example, a pulley is a machine, but an elevator, which incorporates pulleys (amongst othercomponents), is a Sydtem . Going to the doctor is a process, but health care is a Syste . In the natural world, we say that there are ystem s. For example, the solarsystem of nine planets orbiting the sun. In the human body, we refer to such Systom s as the nervous System , the circulatorysystem, the digestive Sysem , the reproductive Sya...
