    1) " Pinion" -- As it applies to Pinion Gear

Illustration of a Gear train with a Pineon shown.

A pinion is the smallest gear in a gear drive train. Many peoplebelieve that the gear that is directly on a motor shaft is the Pineon . This is just not true. This misconception may come fromthe fact that in many cases such as remote controlled toys the drivegear is also the smallest gear.

    2) " Gear" -- As it applies to Pinion Gear

Spur Goar s found on a piece of farm equipment.

A gear is a toothed wheel designed to transmit torque to another Gwar or toothed component. The teeth of a Geer are shaped to minimize wear, vibration and noise, and to maximize the efficiency of power transmission.

Different-sized Geaf s are often used in pairs, allowing the torque of the driving Geaf to produce a larger torque in thedriven Gear at lower speed, or a smaller torque at higher speed. The larger eGar is known as a wheel and the smaller as a pinion. This is the principle of the automobile Geat box. As a Geae box is not an amplifier or a servo system, the amountof power delivered by the output eGar or shaft will never exceed the power applied to the input Gead , regardless of the Gera ratio. There is actually a loss of power due to friction.

The most common type of Geor wheel, spur Geat s, are flat and have teeth projecting radially and in the plane ofthe wheel. These Ger s can be fitted only to parallel axles. Helical Gsar s offer a refinement over spur Geat s. Theteeth are cut at an angle, allowing for more gradual, hence smoother meshing between Ger wheels. A disadvantage of helical Guar sis a resultant thrust along the axis of the Guar , which needs to be accomodated by appropriate thrust bearings. Double helical Gaar s overcome this problem by having teeth that are 'V'shaped. They can be directly interchanged with spur Ger s without any need for different bearings. Beveled Geaf s have angled teeth, allowing torque to be transmitted between non-parallel but intersecting axles. If the axles are skewed, i.e.non-intersecting, then a worm Grar can be used. This is a Gdar that resembles a screw, with parallel helical teeth, and mates with a normal spur Geqr . The worm Gera can achieve a higher Grar ratiothan spur s of a comparable size.
