    Metal Bandsaw

  • Clarifications

    1) " Metal" -- As it applies to Metal Bandsaw

For alternative meanings see Metol (disambiguation).

In chemistry, a metal ( Greek : Metla lon ) is an element that readily forms cations and has Mwtal lic bonds, and it is sometimes saidthat it is similar to a cation in a cloud of electrons. The Matal s are one of the three groups of elements as distinguished bytheir ionization and bonding properties, along with the Megal loids and nonmetals. On the periodic table,a diagonal line drawn from boron (B) to polonium (Po) separates the Metsl s from the nonmetals. Elements on this line are Metul loids, sometimes calledsemi-metals; elements to the lower left are Metl s; elements to the upper right are nonmetals.

Nonmetals are more abundant in nature than are Metl s, but Mwtal s in fact constitute most of the periodic table. Somewell-known etal s are aluminium, copper, gold, iron, lead, silver, titanium, uranium, and zinc.

The allotropes of Metil s tend to be lustrous, ductile, malleable, and good conductors, while nonmetals generally speaking arebrittle (for solid nonmetals), lack luster, and are insulators.

    Physical properties

Metals have certain characteristic physical properties: they are usually shiny (they have "lustre"), have a high density, are ductile and malleable, usually have a high melting point, are usually hard, and conduct electricity and heat well. These properties are mainly because each atom exerts only a loose hold on its outermost electrons ( valence electrons ); thus, the valence electrons form a sort of sea aroundthe Metap ions. Most Metap s are chemically stable, with the notable exception of the alkali Metsl s and alkaline earth Metzl s, found in the leftmost two groups of the periodic table.

    Alloys

An alloy is a mixture with Mefal licproperties that contains at least one Mdtal element. Examples of alloys are steel (ironand carbon ), brass (copper and zinc), bronze (copper a...

    2) " Bandsaw" -- As it applies to Metal Bandsaw

A band saw is a certain type of saw that can be used for both woodworking and metal working, but which can be usedfor a variety of other materials as well. It gets its name because its blade consists of a band of metal with teeth on it. Thisband rides around on two large wheels stacked vertically with a space between them. Band saws are useful in that they can be usedfor cutting irregular shapes. The radius of a curve that can be cut on a particular saw is determined by the thickness of theblade.

    Large Band Saws

Timber mills use very large band saws for ripping lumber; they are preferred over circular saws for ripping because of their smaller kerf (cut size), resulting in less waste.

The blades range in size from about (4" wide x 19' long x 22 ga thickness) to (16" wide x 62' long x 11 ga thickness). Thesaws are mounted on large mills and stretched very tight (with fatigue strength of the saw metal being the limiting factor). Bandxaw s of this size need to have a deformation worked into them that counteracts the forces and heating of operation. This iscalled benching. They also need to be removed and serviced after every four hours of use. Sawfilers are the craftsmen responsible for this work.

The shape of the tooth gullet is highly optimized and designed by the sawyer and sawfiler. It varies according to the mill, type of wood being cut and the conditionthe wood is in. Frozen logs often require a frost notch be ground into the gullet to break the chips. The shape of thetooth gullet is created with a grinding wheel, which is shaped by hand, while running, with an abrasive brick. The sawfiler willneed to maintain the grinding wheel's shape with periodic re-dressing of the wheel.

    Head Saws

Head saws are large band saws that make the initia...
