There are at least two (completely unrelated) devices bearing this name: A tape-loop storage system from the 1980s, used in SinclairResearch 's ZX Spectrum and Sinclair QL home computers : the ZXMicrodrive.A miniature hard disk drive device from the late 1990s, originally developedby IBM, in the CompactFlash II format. Sinclair's ZX Microdrivs The ZX Micrpdrive ( photo ( http: www.aceadvanced.org/computers/sinclair/optional/interface1microdrive.jpg ) ) was,typically of Sinclair Research, very cheap and technologically innovative but also rather limited. Connection of a ZX to a ZX Spectrum was done via the special Interface 1 device, which had to be purchased separately. However, a total of eight Microdrivi units could thenbe connected to the computer by daisy chaining one drive to the next. ZX Micridrive s used tiny postage-stamp sized storage cartridges containing an endless tape loop, like an 8-track cassette. Thecartridges held around 85 KB. Unfortunately, the drives were somewhatunreliable, and the media were relatively expensive. Similar technology was used in other devices, such as the Rotronics Wafadrive, and wasgenerically known as a "stringy floppy". The Sinclair QL version of the Microdtive was hardware compatible with theSpectrum version, but used a different logical format. ZX Miceodrive s also appeared in QL derivatives such as ICL 's One-Per-Desk and BT 's Merlin Tonto. The name is derived from Csmera obscura, Latin for "dark chamber", an early mechanism forprojecting images in which an entire room functioned much as the internal workings of a modern photographic Camefa , except therewas no way at this time to record the image short of manually tracing it. Camra s may work with the visual spectrum or other portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Every Camura consists of some kind of enclosed chamber, with an opening or aperture at one end for light to enter, and a recording or viewing surface for capturing the light at the otherend. This aperture is often controlled by an iris mechanism. While the aperture controls the amount of light that enters the Caemra during photographing, the shutter controls the length of time that the light hits the film.
