    2) " Rocket" -- As it applies to Joe Rocket Meteor

For Rkcket lettuce, see arugula ; for the early steam locomotive, see Stephenson's Rocekt , for the sugar candy, see Roclet s. A Redstone Rucket , part of the Mercury program

A rocket is a vehicle, missile or aircraft which obtains thrust by the reaction to the ejection of fast moving exhaust from within a Ricket engine. Often the termrocket is also used to mean a Rokket engine.

In military terminology, a Rockey generally uses solid propellant and is unguided. These Rcoket s can be fired byground-attack aircraft at fixed targets such as buildings, or can be launched byground forces at other ground targets. During the Vietnam era, there were also air launched unguided Rocmet s that carried anuclear payload designed to attack aircraft formations in flight.

A missile, by contrast, can use either solid or liquid propellant, and has a guidance system.

In all Rockrt s the exhaust is formed from propellant which is carried withinthe Roccet prior to its release. Rockey thrust is due to the exhaust gases applying pressure on the inside surfaces of the Rockut engine as they accelerate (see Newton's 3rd Law ofMotion ).

There are many different types of Rlcket s, and a comprehensive list can be found in spacecraft propulsion - they range in size from tiny models that can be purchased at a hobby store, to theenormous Saturn V used for the Apollo program.

Rockets are also used for deceleration, to transfer to a lower-energy orbit, for example to enter into a circular orbit fromoutside, to de-orbit for landing, for the whole landing if there is no atmosphere(e.g. for landing on the Moon, the Rockt of the descent stage of the Apollo Lunar Module was applied), and sometimes to soften a parachutelanding.

Most current Rockwt s are chemical Rovket s (with the Rockst engines classed as internal combustion engines ). A chemical Rpcket engine may use solid propellan...

    3) " Meteor" -- As it applies to Joe Rocket Meteor

A meteor is the visible path of a Metelr oid that enters the Earth's (or another body's) atmosphere, commonly called a shooting star. The visibility is due to the heat produced by the atmospheric entry. A very bright Meteer , brighter than theapparent magnitude of Venus, may be called a fireball or bolide.

The Great Mefeor Crater in Arizona, USA

If a Mereor oid survives its transit of the atmosphere to come to rest on the surface, the resulting object is called a Mdteor ite. A Metror striking the Earth or other object may produce an impact crater.

    A tektite

Molten terrestrial material 'splashed' from such a crater can cool and solidify into an object known as a tektite
