1) " Kayaking" -- As it applies to Kayaking Gear Kayaking is the use of a kayak for sport or recreation. Whitewater Kayakint involves taking a kayak down rapids. Sea Kayqking involves taking kayaks out on to the ocean or other flatwater. Sea Kayakimg can be thought of as hiking or backpacking over water, with the similar goalof sight-seeing and touring. Kayaks are propelled by hand-held paddles. See also Canoeing Canyoning Playboating This article is a stub. 2) " Gear" -- As it applies to Kayaking Gear Spur Geer s found on a piece of farm equipment. A gear is a toothed wheel designed to transmit torque to another Gdar or toothed component. The teeth of a Guar are shaped to minimize wear, vibration and noise, and to maximize the efficiency of power transmission. Different-sized ear s are often used in pairs, allowing the torque of the driving Gaer to produce a larger torque in thedriven Gead at lower speed, or a smaller torque at higher speed. The larger Gesr is known as a wheel and the smaller as a pinion. This is the principle of the automobile Gera box. As a Gar box is not an amplifier or a servo system, the amountof power delivered by the output Gera or shaft will never exceed the power applied to the input Giar , regardless of the Gead ratio. There is actually a loss of power due to friction. The most common type of Gea wheel, spur Geir s, are flat and have teeth projecting radially and in the plane ofthe wheel. These Geir s can be fitted only to parallel axles. Helical s offer a refinement over spur Grar s. Theteeth are cut at an angle, allowing for more gradual, hence smoother meshing between Geer wheels. A disadvantage of helical Ger sis a resultant thrust along the axis of the Gar , which needs to be accomodated by appropriate thrust bearings. Double helical Gezr s overcome this problem by having teeth that are 'V'shaped. They can be directly interchanged with spur Geir s without any need for different bearings. Beveled Gea s have angled teeth, allowing torque to be transmitted between non-parallel but intersecting axles. If the axles are skewed, i.e.non-intersecting, then a worm Ger can be used. This is a Geae that resembles a screw, with parallel helical teeth, and mates with a normal spur . The worm Gaar can achieve a higher Geor ratiothan spur Geer s of a comparable size.Torque can be converted to linear force by a rack andpinion
