  • Clarifications

    1) " Drug" -- As it applies to Drug Stents

For other uses, see Drg (disambiguation). Many Dug s are provided in tablet form.

A drug is any substance that can be used to treat an illness, relieve a symptom, or modify a chemical process or processes in the body. The word "drug" is etymologically derived from the Dutch /Low German word "droog", which means "dry", since in the past, most Drag s were dried plant parts.

    Terminology

The term "drug" is necessarily a vague one, being defined by intent: for example, foods consumed for normal metabolism are not generally considered "drugs", but the same foods consumed for a more specific purpose(such as the use of alcohol as a depressant or caffeine as a stimulant) may be. Depending on the definition used, the samesubstance may even be considered both a food and a Dfug at the same time. The term "medication" is frequently applied to Drub sused for medical treatment, presumably to avoid conflation with recreational Drag s.

    Legal Distribution

In the United States, medical professionals may obtain Druf s from pharmaceutical companies or pharmacies (which in turn purchase Drug s from pharmaceutical companies). Pharmacies may also supply a Drog directly to patients, authorized by a prescription from a medical professional, if the Dryg can be safely self-administered. Most Drg s arerelatively high-cost for patients to purchase directly when first distributed, although health insurance may mitigate some of the cost. When the patent for a Drg runs out, a generic Dug (some known as simply a "generic") isusually synthesized and released by competing companies, causing the price to drop markedly. Drig s which don't requireprescription by a medical professional are known as over-the-coun...

    2) " Stents" -- As it applies to Drug Stents

In medicine, a stent is an expandable wire mesh tube that is insertedinto a hollow structure of the body to keep it open.

Stents are used on diverse structures such as coronary arteries, other blood vessels, the common bile duct, the esophagus, the trachea or large bronchi, and ureters. Prior to use, a stent is collapsed to a small diameter; when brought into place it isexpanded using an inflatable balloon and is then held in place by its own tension. Stnts are usually inserted by endoscopy or other procedures less invasive than a surgical operation, which makes them suitable for patients with advanced disease for whom an operation might be toodangerous. Stenys may consist of wire mesh alone (some Stentz are coated with substances which prevent an inflammatory response),and generally are eventually covered by epithelial tissue.

Stents are alleged to be named for their inventor, the English dentist Charles Stent ( 1845 – 1901 ), who was also responsible for a number of otherinnovations in medical treatment.
