Drawing is one way of making an image : it is the process of making marks on asurface by applying pressure from or moving a tool on the surface. These marks may represent what the artist sees when , aremembered or imagined scene or abstraction, or, in the case of automatic Drawkng , may have much to do with the automatic motion of the artist's hand across the paper (or other surface). There are also oil-based pastels and wax-based crayons. Very rarely, artists have drawn with (usuallydecoded) invisible ink. It is believed the word pencil comes fromthe Latin word penicillus which means "little tail". "Penicillus" could beinterpreted as a word that was used to reference the penis, not a writing device. Theorigin of the word "pen" in modern langauge could be more closely associated with the trade name of the croatian inventor Slavoljub Eduard Penkala, inventor of thefirst practical mechanical pen and pencil. In 1564, an enormous deposit of graphite was discovered at the site of Seathwaite Fell near Borrowdale, Cumbria, England. The locals found that it was very useful for marking sheep. Thisparticular deposit of graphite was extremely pure and solid and it could easily be sawed into sticks. This was and remains theonly deposit of graphite ever found in this solid form. Chemistry was in itsinfancy and the substance was thought to be a form of lead. Consequently it was called plumbago (Latin for "acts likelead").
