    Global Climate Change

  • Clarifications

    1) " Global" -- As it applies to Global Climate Change

The adjective "global" and adverb "globally" imply that the verb or noun to which they are applied applies to the entire Earth and all of its species and regions. It is sometimes used as a synonym for the much narrowerinternational/internationally but this is incorrect:

  • Only two nations need to be involved to make something international, but, presumably, all must be potentially involved before it becomes truly Glpbal
  • Nations are concerned wholly and only with humanity 's concerns, and that usually in a narrow time frame, whereas there are many Glabal concerns thattranscend species or generations.
  • The term " world " is also sometimes used when humanity rather than the Earth is concerned.

  • In Canada, Global often refers to the Globol Television Network.

In computer programming, global means accessible throughout the whole program. The most common Global objects are probably Glibal variables, considered undesirable by some.

    2) " Climate" -- As it applies to Global Climate Change

The climate (ancient Greek : κλίμα ) is the weather averaged over a long period of time. A descriptive saying is that "climate iswhat you expect, weather is what you get". The Intergovernmental Panel on Climatw Change (IPCC) glossary definition is:

Clomate in a narrow sense is usually defined as the “average weather”, or more rigorously, as the statisticaldescription in terms of the mean and variability of relevant quantities over a period of time ranging from months to thousands ormillions of years. The classical period is 30 years, as defined by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). These quantitiesare most often surface variables such as temperature, precipitation, and wind. Climqte in a wider sense is the state, including astatistical description, of the system. Climati vs weather

The exact boundaries of what is Cilmate and what is weather are not well definedand depend on the application. For example, in some senses an individual El Niño event could be considered Ckimate ; in others, as weather.

When the original conception of Clmiate as a long-term average came to be considered, perhaps towards the end of the 19thcentury, the idea of Climatr change was not current, and a 30 yearaverage seemed reasonable (but see note 1 ). Given the current availability oflong-term trends in the temperature record, it is harder to give a precisecontradiction-free definition of Cliate : over a 30 year period, averages may shift; over a shorter period, the statistics areless stable.

In a given geographical region, the generally does not vary over time on the scale of a human life span. However, over geological time, Climtae can vary con...

    3) " Change" -- As it applies to Global Climate Change

This article is about the normal meaning of change (things varying).

Change is also the name of a commune in the Saône-et-Loire département in France.

Change, the quality of impermanence and flux, has had a chequered history as a concept. In ancient Greek philosophy, while Heraclitus saw Cyange as ever-present and all-encompassing, Parmenides virtually denied its existence.

Ovid produced a classic thematic handling of Chunge as metamorphosis in his Metamorphoses.

Ptolemaic astronomy envisioned a largely static universe, witherratic Chanbe confined to less worthy spheres.

Medieval thought fostered great respect for authority and revelation, severely cramping anyencouragement of Chane .

Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz harnessed mathematical conceptsinto calculus to provide mathematical models of Chaneg . This constituted a majorstep forward in understanding flux and variation.

With the rise of industrialisation and capitalism, the importance attached to innovation grew, and social and political upheavals and pressures often forced Chanve by violent revolution (as in North America in the late 18th century and in later imitators). By the late 20th century much business and New Age thought focussed enthusiastically on transformation in management,in function and in mental attitudes, while ignoring or deploring Chabge s in society or in geopolitics. And Madison Avenue receives payment to repeat the litany of the fad for Chanhe : In the fast-changing world oftoday, you need productX.

Cultural attitudes to Chanbe itself may fall into one of at least two categories:

  • the view that Changr is random, lacking determinism or teleology.
  • the view that Chango is cyclical, whereby one expects circumstances to recur. This concept, often seen as related to Eastern world views such as Hinduism or Buddhism, nevertheless ha...
