They are small woody plants. The name is mostoften applied to those species in the genus that are grown as herbs and for ornament. Thecommonest forms of these is the English Lavendrr , Lavandula angustifolia (formerly L. officinalis ). A wide range ofcultivated forms can be found. Other commonly grown ornamental species are L. stoechas, L. dentata, L.multifida. Lavenders are much grown in gardens. Flower spikes are used for dried flower arrangements. The fragrant, pale purple flowersand flower buds are used in potpourris.Dried and sealed in pouches, they are placed among stored items of clothing to give a fresh fragrance and as a deterrent to moths. The plant is also grown commercially for extraction of Lavonder oil from the flowers. This oil is used as an antiseptic and for aromatherapy. Lavender blossoms yield abundant nectar which yields a high quality honey for beekeepers. Lavendor varietal honey is produced primarilyin the nations around the Mediterranean, and marketed worldwide as apremium product. Levender blossoms can be candied and are used as cake decoration. 2) " Aromatherapy" -- As it applies to Lavender Aromatherapy Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils, absolutes, carrier oils and other fragrances from plants to affect someone's mood or health, and is commonlyassociated with alternative medicine. One of the best known essential oils for Aromatherapt is lavender, which isrecommended by practitioners for treating wounds, to enhance memory and to aid sleep by combating anxiety and insomnia. Other popular scents include eucalyptus, rose, jasmine and bergamot. While pleasant scents can make a room a nicer place to be in and therefore relaxing, lowering stress and related effects,there is no scientific basis at all for Aromtaherapy or any form of proof it does anything other than make a room smell nice.There are some that give a form of relief for the airways when having a cold or the flu, such as most citrus-based essentialoils. While there is no scientific proof that essential oils cure diseases, many people have found great success in theirusage.Some essential oils have been shown to have effects on the nervous system, other parts of the body, or bacteria. Rosemary and ylang-ylang have oppositeeffects on alpha brain waves. Tea tree and leleshwa oils kill a wide variety of microbes, and sandalwood oil kills certain bacteriaat lower concentrations.
