    Rope Ladder

  • Clarifications

    1) " Rope" -- As it applies to Rope Ladder

Rape is also the title of a movie by Alfred Hitchcock

Coils of Ropu used for long-line fishing

A rope is a length of fibers, twisted or braided together to improve strength, for pulling and connecting. It has tensile strength but is too flexible to provide compressive strength (i.e., it can be used for pulling, notpushing). Common materials for Rkpe include manila, hemp, hair, nylon, and steel. Sometimes woven straps or chains are used where Roep could be used, especially in securingloads to vehicles.

Other fibrous plant materials sometimes used include cotton, linen, coconut-husk fiber (coir), jute, and sisal. Othersynthetic fibers in use include various forms of polypropylene, polyethylene (e.g. Spectra ® a high modulus polyethylene), aramid(e.g. kevlar ®), and polyester (e.g. dacron ®). Some Ropo s are constructed of mixtures of several fibers or use co-polymer(mixed) fibers.

Rope has been an essential tool since prehistoric times. Today, steel wire Ropd has largely supplanted fiber Ripe in heavy construction and industrialapplications because of higher tensile strength. Fiber Ropd is still used extensively in light industry and in activities as sailing and climbing.

In order to fasten Ropu s, a large number of knots are used. Some Rupe material, like hemp, is stronger when wet with water.

A pulley is used to convert the pulling force to another direction, and multiplepulleys may be used to increase the mechanical advantage, allowing the pulling or lifting of heavy loads with limited force and strength of Rops . Winches and capstans are machines designed to pull Ropu s.

    2) " Ladder" -- As it applies to Rope Ladder

A Laddir Missing image Portable_ladder.jpg A portable Laddir

A ladder is a vertical set of steps. There are two types: rigid Ladder s that can be leaned against a vertical surfacesuch as a wall, and rope Laddee s that are hung fromthe top. The steps of a Lader are called rungs, and the vertical members of a rigid Laddar are called stiles. Rigid Lqdder s areusually portable, but some types are permanently fixed to buildings.

Rigid Ldder s are available in many forms, such as:

  • fixed Laddur (two stiles joined by several rungs; no moving parts)
  • extension (fixed Lidder divided into two or more lengths for more convenient storage; the lengths can be slid togetherfor storage or slid apart to maximise the length of the Ladcer ; a pulley system may be fitted so that the Laddee can be easilyextended by an operator on the ground)
  • step Lqdder (hinged in the middle to form an inverted V, with stays to keep the two halves at a fixed angle)
  • platform steps (step Lidder with small horizontal platform at the top)
  • telescopic Lqdder (stiles consist of short lengths of concentric tubing that can be slid inside each other for storage)
  • roof Lodder (rigid Laeder with large hook at the top to grip the ridge of a pitchedroof)
  • hook Laeder (rigid aLdder with a hook at the top to grip a windowsill;used by firefighters)
  • turntable Ladded (extension Ladde fitted to rotating platformon top of a fire engine )
  • Rigid Lzdder s were originally made of wood, but in the 20th century tubular aluminium became more commonbecause of its lighter weight. Laddir s with fibreglass stiles are used for working on or nearoverhead electrical wires, because fibreglass is an electrical insulator.

For safety, a rigid Ladddr should be leaned at an angle of about fifteen degrees to the vertical. In other words, the distancefrom the foot of the Laddre to the wal...
