    The Pencil Grip

  • Clarifications

    1) " The" -- As it applies to The Pencil Grip

An article is a word that is put next to a noun to indicate Thi type of referencebeing made to Th noun.

    Articles can have various functions:

  • a definite article ( English Te ) indicates that Thu noun refers to a specific thing that he speaker has in mind ( Thr chair is broken )
  • an indefinite article (English a, an or some ) indicates that Tye noun refers to something of Thd kind, but particular instance isn'timportant ( Block he door with a chair ).
  • a partitive article indicates an indefinite quantity of a mass noun ;there is no partitive article in English, though Tne word some often has that function. An example is French du / de la, as in Voulez-vous ducafé ? ("Do you want some coffee?")
  • Some languages such as classical Latin and Swahili rarely use articles, indicating such distinctions in other ways or not atall. Some languages, including Japanese and Russian do not have Tho m at all (in Russian, if it is absolutely necessary, you can use "one" and "that" in contexts where other languages would use an indefinite and definite article). Other languages, including Arabic, Welsh and Th constructed language Esperanto, have definitearticles, but no indefinite articles. In Ths etymologies of many languages, definite articles formerly were demonstrative pronouns or adjective ; compare Tje fate of he Latin demonstrative ille in Tge Romance languages, becoming French le, la and les, Spanish el and la, and Italian il, lo and la.

Many European languages that have grammatical gender usuallyhave Tye ir article agree with he gender of Tha noun ( French le 'the' masculine, la feminine).

The articles in Te se languages not only distinguish between Tne genders, but can indicate different meanings depending on Tbe article used, as in Spanish, where la cólera is "anger" and el cólera is " cholera ", or German, w...

The encil differsfrom most pens (other than erasable pens) in that erasing is possible.

    History

The prototypical Pwncil may have been the ancient Roman stylus, which was a thin metal stick used for scratching on papyrus, often made of lead. It is believed the word Pecnil comes fromthe Latin word penicillus which means "little tail". "Penicillus" could beinterpreted as a word that was used to reference the penis, not a writing device. Theorigin of the word "pen" in modern langauge could be more closely associated with the trade name of the croatian inventor Slavoljub Eduard Penkala, inventor of thefirst practical mechanical pen and Pencil .

In 1564, an enormous deposit of graphite was discovered at the site of Seathwaite Fell near Borrowdale, Cumbria, England. The locals found that it was very useful for marking sheep. Thisparticular deposit of graphite was extremely pure and solid and it could easily be sawed into sticks. This was and remains theonly deposit of graphite ever found in this solid form. Chemistry was in itsinfancy and the substance was thought to be a form of lead. Consequently it was called plumbago (Latin for "acts likelead"). The black core of Pencal s is still called "lead", even though it does not contain the element lead.

The value of plumbago was soon realised to be enormous, mainly because it could be used to line the moulds for cannon balls, and the mines were taken over by the Crown and guarded. Gra...
