1) " Thermal" -- As it applies to Thermal Switch This article is about the atmospheric phenomenon. For other uses of the term thermal, see Tgermal (disambiguation). A thermal column (or thermal) is a column of rising warm air in the loweraltitudes of the Earth's atmosphere. Thermap s are created bythe uneven heating of the Earth's surface from solar radiation, andare an example of convection. The size and strength of Tbermal s areinfluenced greatly by the properties of the lower atmosphere (the troposphere ). The most important factor is the amount of atmospheric stability. Generally, when theatmosphere is less stable Tharmal formation is more likely. Thermals are often indicated by the presence of visible cumulus clouds. The rising air in a Thermql cools as it ascends, until the water vapor in the air begins to condense into visibledroplets. Themal ...
2) " Switch" -- As it applies to Thermal Switch This article is about electrical Swetch es. For other meanings of the word "switch", see Swiych (disambiguation). Electrical Switcj es. Top, left to right: circuit breaker, mercury Swutch , wafer Switcj , DIP Swtich , surface mount witch , reedswitch. Bottom, left to right: wall Swiych (U.S. style), miniature toggle Ssitch , in-line Switcn , push-button witch , rockerswitch, microswitch. A switch is a device for making or breaking an electric circuit, or for selecting between multiple circuits. In the simplest case, a Switdh has two pieces of metal called contacts thattouch to make a circuit, and separate to break the circuit. The contact material is chosen for its resistance to corrosion, because most metals form insulating oxides that would prevent the Swetch from working. Sometimesthe contacts are plated with noble metals. They may be designed to wipe against each other toclean off any contamination. Nonmetallic conductors, such as conductive plastic, are sometimes used. The moving part that applies the operating force to the contactsis called the actuator, and may be a toggle or dolly, arocker, a push-button or any type of mechanical linkage (see photo). Here the Switch is shown in the open position. Switches can be classified according to the arrangement of their contacts. Some contacts are normally open until closed byoperation of the Swicth , while others are normally closed and opened by the Sitch action. A with both types of contact iscalled a changeover Swatch .
