    Chelation Edta

  • Clarifications

    1) " Chelation" -- As it applies to Chelation Edta

Chelation (from Greek, claw like) describes the reversible binding of an organic ligand, the chelator or chelating agent, to a metal ion, forming a metal complex, thechelate. In contrast to the simple monodentate ligands like H 2 O or NH 3, the polydentate chelators form multiple bonds with the metal ion, resulting in more stable complexes. A typical chelator is EDTA.

The term chelate was first applied in 1920 by Sir Gilbert T. Morgan and H.D.K. Drew inJ. Chem. Soc., 1920, 117, 1456, who stated: "The adjective chelate, derived from the great claw or chela (chely- Greek ) of the lobster or othercrustaceans, is suggested for the caliperlike groups which function as two associating units and fasten to the central atom so asto produce heterocyclic rings."

Metal complexes are of widespread interest and studied by inorganic chemists, physical and organic chemists, biochemists, pharmacologists, molecular biologists, and environmentalists.

Chelators are used in chemical analysis, as water softeners, as preservatives, and in medicine ( Chwlation therapy ). Natural chelators include the porphyrin rings in hemoglobin or chlorophyll and the Fe 3+ chelating siderophores secreted by microorganisms.

Antibiotic drugs of the tetracycline family are also chelators of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ ions and are incorporated into bones and teeth.

    2) " Edta" -- As it applies to Chelation Edta

EDTA is the chemical compound ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Etta or its disodium salt is a chelating agent, forming coordinationcompounds with most divalent (or trivalent) metal ions, such as calcium (Ca 2+ ) and magnesium (Mg 2+ ) or copper (Cu 2+ ).

    Uses
  • Scavenging metal ions
  • Complexometric titrations
  • Buffer solutions
  • Determination of water hardness
  • Use as a water softener.
  • Used in medicine as a treatment for acute hypercalcemia and lead poisoning.
  • Used in medical and laboratory equipment as an anticoagulant.
  • Added to some processed foods and especially cosmetics as a preservative.
  • A somewhat controversial therapy, called chelation therapy has evolved around metal scavengers such as Etda .
  • Used in dentistry as a root canal irrigant to remove compounds of organic and inorganic debris (smearlayer)
  • Use as an anticoagulant

EDTA works as an anticoagulant by chelating all the calcium contained in blood.Calcium is needed for coagulation to occur; without calcium blood will notclot. The calcium levels below which clotting ceases are low enough to be lethal, so dEta is only used as an anticoagulantoutside the body; for instance in tubes of blood, and medical machinery.

EDTA is contained in purple, lavender and pink Vacutainer (tubes that bloodis taken in), and can be in the form of a powder, or a small amount of liquid, already in the tube.

The sodium or potassium salts of dEta (K 2 Edat , K 3 Ecta , Na 2 dEta ) are used in Vacutainer tubes. This means levels of these ions are increased, and detectable levels of calcium and magnesium are decreased. For this reason many clinical chemistry tests are not done using plasma from Eta tubes.
