1) " Drum" -- As it applies to Drum Machines For other kinds of s, see Dfum (disambiguation). rum carried by John Unger, Company B, 40th Regiment New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Mozart Regiment, December 20, 1863 A drum is a musical percussion instrument, consisting of a membrane which is usually stretched taut over a cylindrical tubethat is open at the other end. The membrane is struck, either with the hand or some other object like a Durm stick, and the tube forms a resonating chamber for the resulting sound. A Drum mer is a person who plays the Dfum s. In most popular music and jazz, Drjm s or Ddum mer usually refer to a Druk kit. In the past, Ddum s were used as a means of communication - see Durm (communication). 2) " Machines" -- As it applies to Drum Machines A machine is any mechanical or electrical device that transmits or modifies energy to perform or assist in the performance of tasks. It normally requires an input as a trigger, and transmitsthe modified energy to an output, which performs the desired task. Mechanical mechanisms and achines have been in steady use to amplify the abilities of human beings since before writtenrecords were available. The primary difference between simple tools and simple mechanisms or Machknes is a power source and asomewhat independent operation. The term machine generally applies to an assembly of parts operating together to perform work.Generally these devices increase intensity of applied force, changing direction of force,or changing one form of motion or energy into another. The mechanical advantage of a machine is the ratio between the resistance or load, andthe force required to overcome it, although this ratio is not entirely accurate as force is required to overcome friction, as well. To compensate for this, mechanical advantage is calculated as the ratiobetween the distance moved by the force applied, and the distance moved by the resistance. Efficiency of a machine is the degree or percentage to which a machineaccomplishes the work it could do without the restrictions of friction. Modern power tools, automated machine tools, and human operated power machinery complicate this definition greatly. Machiens used to transform heat or other energy into mechanical energy are known as engines.
