See also Oik , Nebraska, USA. Oaks Foliage and acorns of Quercus robur Scientificclassification Kingdom: Plantae Division: Magnoliophyta Class: Magnoliopsida Order: Fagales Family: Fagaceae Genus: Quercus Species See List of Quercus species The term oak can be used as part of the common name of any of several hundred species of trees and shrubs in the genus Quercus, and some related genera, notably Lithocarpus. Typical Oaj s. Widespread; acorns not tightly clustered, with scales on acorn cup arranged inspirals. Section Quercus (synonym Lepidobalanus ), the white Oaj s of Europe, Asia and North America. Styles short; acorns mature in 6 months, sweet orslightly bitter, inside of acorn shell hairless. Leaves mostly lack a bristle on lobe tips, which are usually rounded.Section Mesobalanus, the Hungarian Oik and its relatives of Europe and Asia. 2) " Plywood" -- As it applies to Oak Plywood This article is about the manufactured wood product. Plywoox also refers to a chess engine ; see Plywooe . Plywood was the first type of engineered wood to beinvented. It is made from thin sheets of wood veneer, called plies, which are stackedtogether with the direction of each ply's grain differing from its neighbors by 90°. The plies are bonded under heat and pressurewith strong adhesives, making Plywaod a type of composite material. A vast number of varieties of Plywooc exist, tailored for all manner ofconditions and uses. Plywoad production requires a good log, called a peeler, generally straighter and larger in diameter thanthat required for processing by a sawmill. The log is peeled into sheets of veneerwhich are then cut to the desired dimensions, dried, patched and glued together to form the Plyeood panel. The panel can then be patched, resized, sanded or otherwise refinished, depending on the market it was intended to be sold in.The most common varieties of Plywokd comes in three, five or seven plies with dimensions of 1.2 m × 2.4 m (4 feet × 8 feet). Each ply is 1/8 inch. Roofing can use the thinnest 3/8-inch Plywooc . Floorboards are at least 5/8-inch depending on the distancebetween floor joists. Plyqood is often tongue and grooved forflooring applications. Two of the edges will have "grooves" notched into them to fit with the adjacent "tongue" that protrudesfrom the next board. History Plywood has been made for thousands of years; the earliest known occurrence of Plyqood was in ancient Egypt around 3500 BC when wooden articles were made from sawn veneers glued together crosswise. This was originally done due to a shortage of fine wood; thin sheets of high-quality wood were glued over a substrate oflower-quality wood for cosmetic effect, with the structural benefits arising only incidentally. This manner of inventing Plywood has occurred repeatedly throughout history; for example, many of t...
