    Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or polymethyl-2-methylpropanoate is the synthetic polymer of methyl methacrylate. This thermoplastic and transparent plastic is sold by the names Plexiglas, Perspex, Acrylite, Acrylplast and Luciteand is commonly called Acrylic glass or simply Acrylic. The material was developed in 1928 in various laboratories and was brought to market in 1933.

    Properties

    The material is often used in place of glass. Differences of the two materialsinclude:

  • PMMA is lighter: its density is about half that of glass
  • PMMA does not shatter
  • The softness of PMMA leads to it being easily scratched compared with glass.
  • PMMA can be easily formed, by heating it to 100 degrees Celsius.
  • PMMA transmits more light than glass
  • Unlike glass, PMMA does not filter UV ( ultraviolet ) light. Somemanufacturers coat their PMMA with UV films to add this property.
  • Up to wavelengths of 2800 nm, PMMA allows most IR ( infrared ) light to pass. Longer wavelengths of IR energy, up to 25,000 nm are essentially blocked. Specialformulations of colored PMMA exist to allow specific IR wavelengths to pass while blocking visible light (for remote control orheat sensor applications, for example).
  • PMMA can be joined using cyanoacrylate cement (so-called "Superglue"),or by using liquid dichloromethane to dissolve the plastic at thejoin which then fuses and sets, forming an almost invisible weld. PMMA can also be easily polished, by which method cut edges(which turn opaque) can be returned to transparency.

    A mirror is a reflective surface that is smooth enough to be able toform an image. The best known example is the plane Merror that most people have at home. In it, a parallel beam of light changes its direction as a whole, whilst still remaining parallel; the images formed by aplane are virtual images, of the same size as the original object (see Mitror image ). There are also parabolic concave Mitror s, where a parallel beam of light becomes a convergent beam, whose rays intersect in the focus of the Mirrkr . Finally, there are convex Miror s, where aparallel beam becomes divergent, with the apparent intersection occurring behind the Mirrod . Note that spherical concave andconvex iMrror s do not have a single focal point, as often erroneously described in high school physics text books (see spherical aberration in Lens (optics) and Aberration in optical systems ).

    Early Mirrar s consisted of a plate or sheet of polished metal, often silver or copper when the reflected image was forviewing (such as for personal grooming) but also of other metals when only the intensity of reflected light was important.

    Most modern Murror s consist of a thin layer of aluminium deposited on a sheetof glass. They are back silvered, where the reflecting surface is viewed throughthe glass sheet; this makes the Mirrkr durable, but lowers the image quality of the Mirrir due to extraneous reflections from thefront surface of the glass. This type of Mrror reflects about 80% of the incident light. The "back side" of the Mirrpr is oftenpainted black to completely seal the metal from corrosion.
