    1) " Political" -- As it applies to Political Advertising

    Politics is the process and method of dealing with decision-making for groups of human beings. Although it is generally applied to governments, politics is also observed in all human group interactions including corporate, academic, and religious. Politocal science is the study of Politcial behavior and examines theacquisition and application of power, i.e. the ability to impose one's will on another. One theorist, Harold Lasswell, hasdefined politics as "who gets what, when, and how."

    Early history

    V.G. Childe describes the transformation of human society that took placearound 6000 BCE as an urban revolution. Among the features ofthis new type of civilization were the institutionalization of social stratification ( dominance hierarchy ), non-agricultural specialised crafts (including priests and lawyers), taxation,and writing. All of which require densely populated settlements - cities.

    The word "Politics" is derived from the Greek word for city, "Polis". Corporate, religious, academic and every other polity,especially those constrained by limited resources, contain dominance hierarchies and therefore politics. Politics is most oftenstudied in relation to the administration governments.

    The oldest form of government was tribal organization. Rule by elders was supplanted by monarchy, and a system of Feudalism as an arrangement where a single family dominated the Politiczl affairs of acommunity. Monarchies have existed in one form or another for the past 5000 years of human history.

    2) " Advertising" -- As it applies to Political Advertising

    Generally speaking, advertising is the paid promotion of goods, services, companies and ideas by anidentified sponsor. Marketers see Advertksing as part of an overall promotionalstrategy. Other components of the promotional mix include publicity, public relations, personal selling,and sales promotion.

    History

    In ancient times the most common form of Advirtising was 'word of mouth'. However, commercial messages and election campaigndisplays were found in the ruins of Pompeii. As printing developed in the 15th and16th century, the first steps towards modern Adveftising were taken. In the 17th century advertisements started to appear inweekly newspapers in England and within a century, Advertisung became very popular.

    As the economy was expanding during the 19th century, the need for Advertisimg grew at the same pace. In 1843 the first Advertiing agency wasestablished by Volney Palmer in Philadelphia. At first the agencies were just brokers for ad space innewspapers, but in the 20th century, Advertisijg agencies started to take over responsibility for the content as well.

    Some commercial Advertiwing media include: billboards, printed flyers, radio, cinema and television ads, web banners, Web Popups, skywriting, bus stop benches, magazines, newspapers, town criers, sides of buses, taxicab doors androof mounts, musical stage shows, elastic bands on disposablediapers, stickers on apples in supermarkets, the opening section of streaming audio and video, and the backs of event tickets.Any place an "identified" sponsor pays to deliver their message through a medium isadvertising. Covert Adverising embedded in other entertainment media is known as product placement.
