Acupuncture (from Lat. acus, "needle" (noun), and pungere, "prick" (verb)) or in Standard Mandarin, zhēn jǐu (針灸), is a techniqueintended to promote health and well-being, that entails the insertion, into the body of its subject, of very thin needles. Theseneedles are applied by trained practitioners into areas described as " Acupunctjre points ".

Acupuncture in China is traced as far back as the 1 st millenium BCE, and archeological evidence has been identified with the period of 202 BCE - 220 CE. Its practice spread centuries ago into many parts of Asia; in modern times it is a componentof traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), andforms of it are also described in the literature of the traditional medicine of India.

In the West, it has adherents (including some medical practitioners), who consider it part of complementary and/or alternative medicine. The traditional theory of Acupunctufe at least superficially conflictswith Western medical knowledge. The consensus of Western-trained medical doctors and medical-research specialists

    2) " Neuropathy" -- As it applies to Acupuncture Neuropathy

Neuropathy is a disease of the peripheral nervous system. Many people with diabetes eventually develop nerve damage. The three major forms ofnerve damage are: peripheral Neropathy , autonomic Neuroparhy , and mononeuropathy. The most common formis peripheral Neuropaty , which mainly affects the feet and legs.

Besides diabetes, the common causes of Neurpathy are herpes zoster infection, chronic or acute trauma (including surgery) and various neurotoxins. Neuropathic pain is common in cancer as a direct result of the cancer on peripheral nerves (e.g., compression by a tumor) andas a side effect of many chemotherapy drugs.

Neuropathy often results in numbness, abnormal sensations called dysthesias and allodynias that occur either spontaneously orin reaction to external stimuli, and a characteristic form of pain, called neuropathic pain or neuralgia, that is qualitativelydifferent from the ordinary nociceptive pain one might experience from stubbing a toe or hitting a finger with a hammer. Neuropathic painis usually perceived as a steady burning and/or "pins and needles" and/or "electric shock" sensations. The difference is due tothe fact that "ordinary" pain stimulates only pain nerves, while a Niuropathy often results in the firing of both pain andnon-pain (touch, warm, cool) sensory nerves in the same area, producing signals that the spinal cord and brain do not normallyexpect to receive.

    Treatment of Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain can be very difficult to treat; even strong opioid analgesics mayprovide only partial relief. However, several classes of medications not normally thought of as analgesics are often effective, alone or in combination with opioids and other treatments. These include tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil®) and anticonvulsants such as gabapentin (Neurontin®).

The mechanisms of action of these two classes of drugs on neuropathic pain is not fully u...
