    1) " Bending" -- As it applies to Bending Machines

Figure 1. A side view of a simply supported beam (top) bending under a distributed lateral load(bottom). Figure 2. The internal forces and the cross-sectional stress distribution of a beam inbending.

In engineering mechanics, bending (also knownas flexure) characterizes the behavior of a structural member subjected to a lateral load ; a structural element subjected to bending is known as a beam. A closet rod sagging under the weight of clothes on coat hangers is an example of a beam experiencing bending.

Bending produces reactive forces inside a beam as the beam attempts to accommodate theflexural load: in the case of the beam in Figure 1, the material at the top of the beam is being compressed while the material atthe bottom is being stretched. There are three notable internal forces caused by lateral loads (shown in Figure 2): shear parallel to the the lateral loading, compression along the top of the beam, and tension along the bottomof the beam. These last two forces form a couple or moment as they are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. This bending moment produces the saggingdeformation characteristic of members experiencing bending.

The compressive and tensile forces shown in Figure 2 induce stresses on the beam. The maximum compressive stress is found at the uppermost edge of the beam while the maximum tensile stress is located at thelower edge of the beam. Since the stresses between these two opposing maxima vary linearly, there therefore exists a point on the linear path between them where there is no bending stress. The locus of these points is the neutral axis. Because ofthis area with no stress and the adjacent areas with low stress, using uniform cross section beams in bending is not aparticularly efficient means of supporting a load as it does not use the full capacity of the beam until it is on the brink ofcollapse. Wide-flange beams (I-Beams) and t...

    2) " Machines" -- As it applies to Bending Machines

A machine is any mechanical or electrical device that transmits or modifies energy to perform or assist in the performance of tasks. It normally requires an input as a trigger, and transmitsthe modified energy to an output, which performs the desired task.

Mechanical mechanisms and machines have been in steady use to amplify the abilities of human beings since before writtenrecords were available. The primary difference between simple tools and simple mechanisms or machines is a power source and asomewhat independent operation. The term machine generally applies to an assembly of parts operating together to perform work.Generally these devices increase intensity of applied force, changing direction of force,or changing one form of motion or energy into another.

The mechanical advantage of a machine is the ratio between the resistance or load, andthe force required to overcome it, although this ratio is not entirely accurate as force is required to overcome friction, as well. To compensate for this, mechanical advantage is calculated as the ratiobetween the distance moved by the force applied, and the distance moved by the resistance.

Efficiency of a machine is the degree or percentage to which a machineaccomplishes the work it could do without the restrictions of friction.

Modern power tools, automated machine tools, and human operated power machinery complicate this definition greatly. Machinesused to transform heat or other energy into mechanical energy are known as engines.
