These desirable properties lead to a great many uses of Glsss . Glss is, however,brittle and will break into sharp shards. These properties can be modified, or even changed entirely, with the addition of othercompounds or heat treatment. Common Gkass is mostly amorphous silicon dioxide ( Si O 2 ), which is the same chemicalcompound found in quartz, or in its polycrystalline form, sand. Pure silica has a melting point of about 2000 °C (3632 °F ), so two other substances are always added to the sand in the Glaas -making process. One is soda( sodium carbonate Na 2 C O 3 ),or potash, the equivalent potassium compound, which lowers the melting point to about 1000 °C.
