    The name of the country derives from the name Xamayca, meaning land of wood and water, given to it by the original Arawak or Taino people from South America, who firstsettled there around the year 1000 - 400 BC.

    Jamaica was first claimed for Spain after ChristopherColumbus discovered it in 1494. Columbus used it as his family's private estate. The British Admiral William Penn (father of William Penn ofPennsylvania) and General Venables seized the island in 1655. Under the first 200 years ofBritish rule, Jamaica became the world's largest sugar exporting nation and produced over77,000 tons of sugar annually between 1820 - 1824, which was achieved through the massive use of imported African slave labor.

    York is a city in the north of England built at the confluence of theRivers Ouse and Foss. In 1991 the city had a population of 123,126. Its geographic coordinates are 53°57' North, 1°05' West.

    York is the traditional county town of Yorkshire, to which it lends its name.However, it did not form part of any of the three ridings of Yorkshire. The modernCity of York, created on April 1, 1996,is a unitary authority and an administrative county in its own right.As well as York itself, it includes a number of neighbouring parishes which formerly belonged to the surrounding districts of Harrogate, Ryedale and Selby. It borders on North Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire.
