STEVE EARLE

"Transcendental Blues"
(E-Squared-Artemis)

1. "TRANSCENDENTAL BLUES" (4) Great beginning ! The flagship song for this album. Engaging descending melody.
2. "EVERYONE IN LOVE WITH YOU" (3+) Another radio-ready song. More backing guitar distention(like title track).
3. "ANOTHER TOWN" (3+) Rockabilly at its finest. Has a Jules Shear type vibe. Hope Phil gets airplay.
4. "I CAN WAIT" (3) Nice intermingling of guitars.
5. "THE BOY WHO NEVER CRIED" (3) I like the sound of the harmonium. Nice string
backing.
6. "STEVE'S LAST RAMBLE" (3+) Bluegrass for the new millenium has a bayou beat. This would work well at the folk festival.
7. "THE GATEWAY GIRL" (3+) Beausoliel would be proud! Steve gives folk music a real pick-me-up.
8. "LONELIER THAN THIS" (2+) I like the simple production on this one!
9. "WHEREVER I GO" (2+) Short little rock number.
10."WHEN I FALL" (4) Dylanesque. I like Stacey Earle's soulful vocals. This is a keeper.
11. "I DON"T WANT TO LOSE YOU YET" (3) The electric and acoustic guitars work well of each other on this track.
12. "HALO 'ROUND THE MOON" (3+) Nice percussion pulling a good beat.
13. "UNTIL THE DAY I DIE" (3) A traditional bluegrass number with the mandolin and fiddle jumping out at you.
14."ALL MY LIFE" (2+) This one has a rock and roll feel.
15. "OVER YONDER(JONATHAN'S SONG)"(2+) Haunting mandola ode to a dead man walking.

OVERALL COMMENTS: Steve's songwriting is reminiscent of Jules Shear. It's nice to have some seldom heard instruments (Harmonium,Bouzouki, Resonater & Guitar)

OVERALL RATING: 3+
