ADULT ALTERNATIVE REVIEW
by John Rose

PHIL ROY
"Grouchy Friendly" (No label info).

RATING (1-5) Weakest to Strongest (+ Push,-Pull)

1. INTRO PRAYER-(narrated)-Short southern blues gospel intro.
2. MELT- (5+)- A beautiful song. One of the best in 2000. Wonderful guitar work and an overall great recording.
3. SHOW ME THE WAY HOME (4)- A good follow up to "Melt". Possible Triple A single. Nick backing orchestration.
4. WHY DO WE MAKE IT SO HARD(3+)- Interesting atonal guitar work. This one grows on you.
5. THIS BUSINESS OF LOVE(3)- "Scat" type piece. Stray Cats in a mellower sense..

6. RIDICULOUS (3)- Nice interplay between piano, bass and cello. Wish it was longer.
7. TRAINS RUNNING (2)- Interesting hop percussion. With a hip hop feel.
8. WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE"(3+) Vocals remind me of Tom Waits. Nice song.
9.IF ONLY IF(2+) I liked the guitar interplay.
10.EVERYTHING MY HEART DESIRES(2)- Beautiful bluesy trumpet.
11. ALCOHOL AFFECTION (2) Haunting song.
12. PERFECT ONE(3) Melody reminds me of a Nine Inch Nails song. (Can't recall the name)
13. UNDER STARS(2) "Lounge" type song.
14. IT'S ALRIGHT(3) Good tune.
15. JOLLY(Narrated) And I thought it was" The Bear Goes Over
The Mountain".

OVERALL COMMENTS: This music falls somewhere between folk and jazz. A WXPN-FM(Phila, Pa. Triple A Radio Station)favorite for 2000 in their Top 50 and I agree. Would have liked to hear "Show Me The Way Home and" Why Do We Make It So Hard" on WXPN.

OVERALL RATING: 3
