"Whoa Nelly"
(DreamWorks)
RATINGS
are 1 (Weakest) to 5 (Strongest) (+ Push, - Pull)
1)
"HEY MAN" (3) Nice orchestral opening (atonal). Hip
hop beat.
Nelly's vocal range is great.
2)
"SHIT ON THE RADIO (REMEMBER THE DAYS)"(3+) Techno effects.
Nice base line- sharp production. Some airplay potential.
3)
"BABY GIRL" (3) Funky intro. R & B vibe to this
one. Fun vocal layering.
Catchy hook with cool sampling.
4)
"LEGEND" (4-) Bossa Nova groove. I feel like I'm in
Brazil ! Intricate
vocal tracking. Favorite but not a single.
5)
"I'M LIKE A BIRD" (5) Ominous beginning. Great change
ups with killer
hooks! Tops out on the "hit meter".
6)
"TURN OFF THE LIGHT" (4) A menagerie of sampling - the
second single.
Funky rap-like vocals.
7)
"TRYNNA FINDA WAY" (3+) More R & B with a creative
guitar interlude.
Moves from R & B to rock guitar. I like this one.
8)
"PARTY" (3+) Has that Latin feel (hear also "Legend").
Vocal effects
remind me of Depeche Mode ("Violator") . Great percussion.
9)
"WELL WELL" (2) "Chimmy" melody with more
hip hop. Timely orchestration.
10)
"MY LOVE GROWS DEEPER" -Part 1 (2) Sampling galore.
This is heavy
into R & B.
11)
"I WILL MAKE YOU CRY" (2-) Just an extension of "My
Love Grows
Deeper" Part 1.
12)
"SCARED OF YOU" (3+) Creative chorus. Harp-like sound
(from the
vibraphone). "Spanish" guitars. Welcome to the "Hotel
Furtado".
OVERALL COMMENTS: Nelly's songwriting is unbelievable for this
first
offering. She has a unique voice. You can hear the Portuguese
influence
in this Canadian-born talent. Will sit well with the R & B
Triple A crowd.
Great production on the vocals. Kudos to Gerald Eaton and Brian
West.
This is a case where the sum is greater than the parts.
